A 10 minute drive north from Karon by local taxi to the heart of
Phuket's nightlife scene. Discos, restaurants, bars, transvestite
shows, tenpin bowling, bungy jumping, shopping, it's all here!
The Snake Farm. Part of the Phuket Shooting Range complex
this show is part educational with demonstrations on what to if
you encounter a snake in the wild, and how to treat a wound if you
are unfortunate enough to be bitten. The part of the show that includes
seemingly sensible young men dance around, kiss, and otherwise annoy
the snakes may make you a bit squeamish. Head towards Chalong Circle
and follow the directions to the Phuket Shooting Range. Elephant
trekking and Paintball are also found in this complex.
Karon Beach almost merges
into Kata at the north end along the coast. Many of the larger resorts
and hotels dominate the beach with most of the facilities behind..
Karon has a long stretch of beach with the peculiar phenomenon of
white sand that "squeaks" underfoot.
Nui Beach. Remote and away from the crowds, because it's
not easy to get to! Possible by mountain bike or larger motorcycle
but don't try to go on standard rental motorbike like a Honda 'Dream"
or by normal car - you'll end up with repair bills to the vehicle
and to yourself. The track is very steep, dusty or slippery (depending
on the weather) so the best transport is on foot. Take a 2 kilometre
walk to this beautiful and pristine beach. To get there: Follow
the coast road south from Kata to the viewpoint and continue down
the road about a half kilometre where you will see a small parking
area and sign for Nui Beach. Park and walk!
Just before the turning to Nui beach you'll see a pagoda type structure
known as Kata Viewpoint Here you can see the west coast of
Phuket stretching in the distance including the beaches of Kata,
Karon and down as far as Patong.
Also along this coastal road, continuing south you'll eventually
find Nai Harn, Rawai and the scenic viewpoint of Laem Promthep,
a famous viewpoint on the southern tip of the Phuket, overlooking
the offshore islands, especially at sunset. The view from the top
of the lighthouse overlooking both land and sea for miles is stunning.
The lighthouse is open until 6.00pm on most days. Great photo opportunities
at sunset.
